Intern FAQs

Will this be a paid internship?

Yes. Participating firms commit to paying at least $20/hour.

Do I apply to a specific firm?

No. You will submit an application to the program at large. Our partners at Advisor Business Solutions will interview all intern candidates and host fims. We try to match applicants with the best-fit firms to increase the liklihood of a successful match.

Who will be selected?

We typically provide at least three intern candidates per open position for firms to consider hiring. The firms participating in the program will select the interns they would like to interview and ultimately extend an internship offer to. Each firm will have their own way of evaluating candidates, which may include interviews (virtually or in person) and/or assessments. Typically firms will look for the following traits in candidates: curiosity, intellect, strong work ethic, strong sense of initiative, organizational skills, analytical skills and excellent communication skills.

Do I need previous financial planning experience?

No, you do not. The whole point of the BLX Internship Program is to help you get your foot into the door of the financial planning profession. However, a demonstration of interest in the financial planning profession is required. For example, majoring in financial planning, attending financial planning conferences or local association events, and taking strides to increase your own personal financial literacy skills show a desire to work in the profession. Firms also look for skill sets such as work ethic, curiosity and initiative. This can be shown through blogging, society involvement, community involvement, etc. Don't be modest in bragging about yourself!

If I am a student, do I have to attend a US university?

Yes. If you are currently a student, you must be attending classes at a US based college or university. If you are currently living in the US and have graduated from the college of a foreign country, you do not need to have graduated from a US university if you are able to work in the US.

When will I know whether or not I have secured an internship?

You should expect to know whether you have been successful by the end of February. If you do not secure an internship, please do not be discouraged. The program is highly competitive and you can apply again next year.

What is the most important thing you look for?

The most important thing we are looking for is potential. We are looking for candidates who are passionate about personal financial planning. We will ask questions like: You can choose any career or job that is out there, why have you chosen financial planning?
